Thai Tribal Crafts

Established in Chiang Mai in 1973, Thai Tribal Crafts co-ordinates products from seven hill tribes across 50 remote villages of Northern Thailand. They provide development opportunities which improve the quality of life and lift the economic level of the tribal people.

Thai Tribal Crafts operate under the principle of fair trade: they aim to pay producers the highest price possible and sell the products at a price which just covers expenses. Any financial gain realised beyond the basic needs goes back to the artisans in the form of benefits.

The income from craft work is an essential supplement to subsistence farming. Preservation of traditional arts and craft forms, languages and customs also helps retain the cultural identity of disadvantaged tribal minorities.
